20th Annual Donald Riegle Community Service Award

The 20th annual Donald Riegle Community
Service Award event was held October 21st, 2009 at the Flint Institute of Arts. This year, the honorees inlcuded Robert Piper, Leo Seide, and Charlotte Williams for their outstanding service to the community.

JCS Receives Grant

Jewish Community Services has received a grant of $16,000 from United Way of Genesee County for Immigrant Family Services. The funding will be used to support at-risk immigrant families through a variety of services, including outreach, case coordination, acculturation, advocacy, document translation, medical and other interoperation services, and clerical assistance with immigration paperwork. Bilingual Russian and Asian Indian staff are available for clients with limited English proficiency.

During the past year, JCS has helped immigrant families find affordable health care and alternative housing; coordinated care for relatives; helped resolve problems with medical bills; provided interpretation services at medical appointments; and helped with access to food and financial assistance programs. JCS assisted 73 individuals and provided 483 interpretation and case coordination contracts.

In cooperation with Metro Housing Partnership Inc., family members in an Individual Development Account Program, which includes financial literacy classes and savings plan that offers a $3 match for every $1 saved up to $1,000. Savings can be used for education, small businesses start-ups or firsttime home purchases.
